Durham, EnglandAs a travel writer, one gets a lot of invitations on press trips – and one consequently gains a pretty good insight into what it's like to be on the receiving end of a guided tour.

I was based in Norway for some years, and was quite closely involved with the educational sector there. When, in 1998, I was asked to help in organising a trip to the UK for some 50 17-20 year old students, I leapt at the chance. It was an entirely logical step to apply my knowledge in a slightly different way.

Since then I have run dozens of tours into the UK and Ireland, for both educational and specialist corporate groups, including local authorities, electricity companies, and the like.

I provide a bespoke service, organising transport, accommodation, setting up appropriate meetings and contacts – all aspects of the tour are covered. And the group has the advantage of having a 'local' on hand who knows the system should something go awry. Peace of mind is a great thing to have when travelling with a group.

It's great fun to do, and extremely satisfying, although there is a lot to think about when you have several dozen teenagers in tow, whether they have teachers with them or not.

And yes, I do speak Norwegian.
